The Minister of Agriculture in Nigeria has proposed a ban on the import of fish and sea food. The government wants to boost local industry, but a ban will not be easy to enforce. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege travelled to the city of Port Harcourt in Rivers State and filed this report.
0:28 I like how the fish keeps swimming towards the water pouring into the tub as they get pushed away by the force.
This isn’t socialism (look up the meaning of socialism please), it’s rather monopolization of an industry by domestic producers. Most countries did this sort of thing in the past to protect domestic producers to the chagrin of domestic consumers.
Um…. Fail. To subsidise I guess the government gets the money from the government widget factory then hey? Or other taxpayers as in a corporate social welfare payment. Called Socialism.
The government are courrupt….shame on them
Nigeria has at no time declared or proposed to declare a total ban on fish importation into the country. In fact the Ministry has readdressed this severally through the media. This was published online on Tribune website of Friday, 27 December, 2014: “We hereby emphasise that the claim projecting a total ban on fish import is not true and did not originate from the minister, who has emphasised that at no time did he announce a total ban on the importation of frozen fish into the country.” A number of other websites also have the right information on this matter.
it’s ridiculous to tax imported fish to subsidize road construction, they should tax gasoline instead.
it is not a wise decision…If demand and supply not filled properly fish price will go high. Also all types of fish can not produce in farms. Sea fish can grow in sea only. For fish farms fish food also need to be imported. Ultimately people should pay for fish+fish food…Again farm fish is not tasty like others..
Farmed fish have more diseases and parasites like fish lice than wild fish. How are the concerns about farmed fish being treated with medicines unsafe for human consumption being addressed? Or is it only about the money, honey?
Of course he wants a ban, its more profitable for him. The truth is banning it makes it more costly for 99% of everyone else in the country, for the sake of the 1% farming them… Its cronyism and destroys the wealth of the county in Socialist ideology.
